Orange Fluff Dessert
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Chilling Time: 1–2 hours
Servings: 8–10
Ingredients
For the Base
1 package (3 oz) orange gelatin dessert mix
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup cold water
For the Creamy Mixture
1 container (8 oz) whipped topping, thawed
1 package (3.4 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix
Fruit and Add-ins
1 can (15 oz) mandarin oranges, drained well
1 can (20 oz) crushed pineapple, drained well
1 1/2 cups mini marshmallows
1/2 cup cottage cheese (optional but traditional)
Equipment
Large mixing bowl
Medium mixing bowl
Whisk or spoon
Rubber spatula
Measuring cups
Refrigerator-safe container or serving bowl
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Gelatin
In a medium bowl, add the orange gelatin powder. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the powder and stir for about 2 minutes until the gelatin completely dissolves. Once dissolved, add 1/2 cup of cold water and stir again. Set the mixture aside to cool for about 10 minutes. It should be cool but still liquid.
Step 2: Mix the Pudding Base
In a large mixing bowl, add the instant vanilla pudding mix. Slowly pour the cooled orange gelatin mixture into the pudding mix while whisking. Continue whisking for about 1 minute until it begins to thicken slightly.
Step 3: Add the Creamy Ingredient
Add the cottage cheese to the mixture if using. Stir until evenly combined. The mixture will start to look creamy and slightly thick.
Step 4: Fold in the Whipped Topping
Add the thawed whipped topping to the bowl. Using a spatula, gently fold it into the mixture. Fold slowly so the whipped topping stays light and fluffy. Continue folding until the mixture is smooth and evenly colored.
Step 5: Prepare the Fruit
Make sure the mandarin oranges and crushed pineapple are well drained. Excess liquid can make the dessert watery. If needed, place the fruit in a strainer for a few minutes.
Step 6: Add Fruit and Marshmallows
Add the drained mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple, and mini marshmallows to the bowl. Gently stir everything together until all ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the fluffy mixture.
Step 7: Transfer to Serving Dish
Spoon the orange fluff mixture into a large serving bowl or a container with a lid. Smooth the top with a spatula.
Step 8: Chill the Dessert
Place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill for at least 1–2 hours. Chilling allows the pudding and gelatin to fully set and helps the flavors blend together.
Step 9: Stir Before Serving
Before serving, gently stir the dessert once to make sure the fruit and marshmallows are evenly distributed. Serve chilled.
Serving Suggestions
Orange fluff can be served as a dessert or as a sweet side dish at gatherings, potlucks, picnics, and holiday meals. It pairs well with grilled foods, barbecue meals, and buffet-style dinners.
Storage Instructions
Store orange fluff in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh for about 3–4 days. Stir gently before serving again. This dessert is not recommended for freezing because the texture can change after thawing.
Variations
For a slightly different flavor, some people add shredded coconut or chopped pecans. Others mix in small cubes of orange gelatin that has already been set. You can also replace the vanilla pudding with cheesecake pudding for a richer taste.
This recipe creates a soft, creamy, fruit-filled dessert that is light, sweet, and easy to prepare.
