Bread Manchurian

Bread Manchurian is a creative Indo-Chinese fusion dish where crispy fried bread balls are tossed in a spicy, tangy, and slightly sweet Manchurian sauce. It is a quick and budget-friendly snack that transforms simple bread slices into a flavorful and satisfying dish. Perfect as an appetizer or evening snack.

Ingredients

For Bread Balls

  • 6–8 bread slices (edges removed)
  • 2 medium boiled potatoes (mashed)
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 green chili (finely chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • Oil for deep frying

For Manchurian Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon ginger (finely chopped)
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 small capsicum (finely chopped)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour mixed with ½ cup water (slurry)
  • 2 tablespoons spring onions (chopped, for garnish)

Preparation Method

  1. Take bread slices and dip them quickly in water, then squeeze out excess water completely.
  2. In a bowl, mix the soaked bread with mashed potatoes, cornflour, ginger-garlic paste, green chili, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Knead everything into a soft dough and shape into small balls.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the balls until golden brown and crispy. Remove and set aside.
  5. In another pan, heat oil and add chopped garlic and ginger. Sauté until fragrant.
  6. Add onions and capsicum, and stir-fry on high heat for 2–3 minutes to keep them slightly crunchy.
  7. Add tomato ketchup, soy sauce, chili sauce, vinegar, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  8. Pour in the cornflour slurry and cook until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  9. Add the fried bread balls to the sauce and toss gently so they are well coated.
  10. Cook for 1–2 minutes and switch off the flame.

Serving Suggestion
Serve hot, garnished with fresh spring onions. It pairs well with fried rice or can be enjoyed on its own as a snack.
