Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
Air fryer mozzarella sticks are a quick and easy snack with a crispy golden exterior and gooey, melted cheese inside. Using an air fryer gives them a fried-like texture without deep frying, making them lighter while still indulgent.
Preparation Time: 15 minutes (plus freezing time)
Cooking Time: 6–8 minutes
Total Time: About 25 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
8 mozzarella cheese sticks (string cheese)
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning (optional)
Cooking spray or a small amount of oil
Equipment
Air fryer
3 shallow bowls or plates
Tongs
Parchment paper (optional)
Freezer
Step 1: Prepare the Cheese Sticks
Unwrap the mozzarella sticks and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps the coating stick.
Step 2: Freeze the Cheese
Place the cheese sticks on a plate or tray and freeze for at least 30 minutes. Freezing prevents the cheese from melting too quickly during air frying and keeps it from oozing out.
Step 3: Prepare the Coating Stations
Set up three shallow bowls or plates:
- Bowl 1: flour
- Bowl 2: beaten eggs
- Bowl 3: breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder and Italian seasoning if using
Step 4: Coat the Cheese Sticks
Take one frozen cheese stick at a time and roll it in flour, shaking off any excess.
Dip it into the beaten eggs, coating it completely.
Roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently so the breadcrumbs stick well.
For extra crunch and a more secure coating, repeat the egg and breadcrumb step for a double layer.
Step 5: Prepare the Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush with a small amount of oil.
Step 6: Air Fry the Cheese Sticks
Place the coated mozzarella sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Leave a little space between them to allow hot air circulation.
Cook for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through. The sticks should be golden brown and crispy. Keep a close eye toward the end to avoid overcooking, which can cause the cheese to leak out.
Step 7: Serve
Remove the mozzarella sticks from the air fryer and let them cool for 1–2 minutes.
Serve immediately with marinara sauce, ranch, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Cooking Tips
- Keep the cheese sticks frozen until right before coating to prevent melting during cooking.
- Do not overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- Lightly spraying the coated sticks with oil helps achieve a golden crust.
Storage Instructions
Mozzarella sticks are best served fresh. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Reheat in the air fryer for 2–3 minutes to restore crispiness.
Freezing Instructions
Uncooked coated mozzarella sticks can be frozen on a tray for about 1–2 hours until firm, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to 1 month. Air fry directly from frozen for 8–10 minutes until golden and melted.
Variations
- Add crushed herbs or parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb mixture for extra flavor.
- Use different cheeses such as provolone, cheddar, or pepper jack for a unique taste.
- For a spicier version, mix paprika, cayenne, or chili flakes into the breadcrumbs.
